PROVISION OF END-TO-END QUALITY OF SERVICE GUARANTEES IN MULTIMEDIA TELECOMMUNICATION
Klara Nahrstedt
Currently, the telecommunications industry undergoes
fundamental changes due to new challenges to support multimedia
communication. These challenges come from new media such as
audio and video which have very different requirements from
traditional data and text information. Particularly, their
requirements for quality of services (QoS) and guarantees in
end-to-end fashion will need to be satisfied. The reason is
that the quality of multimedia delivery over data networks
competes with the quality of radio and television services which
the users already know and are used to their quality.
In this paper we present services and protocols, concepts and
algorithms for provision of end-to-end QoS guarantees in
multimedia telecommunication. We present frameworks and possible
solutions to the above described challenges and show them on
case studies of existing and experimental systems.
