The growing importance of mechatronics, a multi-disciplinary approach
to engineering is becoming increasingly apparent. Mechatronics is the
fundamental key in the progress of mechanical devices toward intelligent
products and can be regarded as the fusion of mechanics, electronics
and computer architecture processes. After introduction of mechatronics
and the Special Research Program SFB-241 "IMES" (Innovative Mechatronic
Systems) this paper highlights a methodology for specification,
prototyping and emulation using real-world applications currently
investigated at the Institute of Microelectronic Systems. Selected
applications will illustrate different aspects of the presented design
methodology.
Keywords: mechatronics, rapid prototyping, algorithm emulation, hardware-in-the-loop simulation
