CALCULATION OF TEM MODE FIELD DISTRIBUTION IN GTEM-CELL USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Kresimir Malaric

GTEM-cells (Giga-Hertz Transversal ElectroMagnetic cells) are waveguide structures used for electromagnetic compatibility measurements, as well as for biomedical applications. The electromagnetic field distribution inside the cell is TEM mode. With TEM mode of propagation, there is no component of electric and magnetic field in the direction of propagation of electromagnetic wave. There are only perpendicular field components. If we assume that below the cut-off frequency of the cell (before the introduction of higher order modes) the TEM field distribution is ideal, then the electromagnetic field distribution is actually static. Then we can use simple 2D model instead of more complicated 3D model.

Keywords: transversal electromagnetic mode, GTEM-cell, finite element method, electrostatics
