A NOVEL SPLINE-FUNCTION BEAM-PROPAGATION-METHOD (SF-BPM) FOR COMPUTER SIMULATION OF WAVE PROPAGATION IN PHOTONIC STRUCTURES

¼ubomír Šumichrast

A novel beam propagation algorithm, particularly for high-index-contrast photonic waveguiding structures, has been developed that improves accuracy by using third order interpolation polynomial instead of the common second order polynomial. The performance of the new method is demonstrated, using as the benchmark test structures, a simple slab waveguide. Due to the higher degree of the interpolating polynomial the method maintains its accuracy with fewer sample points allowing significant reduction in calculation time.
